Paula Walter returns to the Sierra Art Trails this year with her outstanding jewelry. She says, “My life changed in an instant when I made my first pair of beaded earrings. I immediately felt a strong desire to create and a deep connection to seed beads. The best way to describe this experience is to state that suddenly I realized what I was meant to do with my life.” She made this discovery in October 1991. She say that she was consumed by her passion and she began visiting museums and creating her own “one of a kind” jewelry. Paula felt that her creations are spiritually inspired because when she is beading she feels one with the Creative Spirit. She says, “Each piece begins by my playing with the beads and stones until a palette has been established.” She usually works intuitively, choosing the beads as she stitches. Paula says, “Although many techniques are employed, they are primarily appliqué and peyote stitches. I bead on ultra-suede and I use upholstery thread. The pieces take an average of sixty hours to complete, but a larger one can take up to two hundred hours.” A devotion to the art and the desire to share her passion for beadwork has led her to teach, not only advanced students, but beginners as well. She has taught beading in many different settings across the United States. Her work is breathtaking and a must see while on the “Trail” this October. Catalogs for the show are now on sale in Mariposa. They act as the ticket for two and contain maps to guide the visitors as they travel along this fabulous trail of outstanding art.
