The Mariposa County 2006 Budget
 

Yesterday was day one of the 2006 Mariposa Budget Talks with the Mariposa County Board Of Supervisors.

There are no public copies for the public available for free, so the public sits there like fish in bowl looking out at the Board of Supervisors while they shuffle through papers of different colors as they even have a hard time keeping up with the situation.

We feel that copies should be available for free to the public since this is the public's budget not just the Board of Supervisors. Or they should utilize a Power Point Demonstration or even an overhead projector so the public can keep abreast of what is going on as they bounce from page to page.

During these lean times the main Branch of the Mariposa County Library will be closed on Saturday, saving the library about $3,000 - $4,000 but depriving the public of a day to visit the library.
Meanwhile the Ag Commissioner will receive a pay package worth about $15,000 - $16,000 a year.
This pay package was not even mentioned yesterday !
So we deprive over 10,000 visits to the library on Saturday's to save money but then turn around with no questions asked and give an obscene pay raise to a department head.

How to keep your workers happy in Mariposa County.
Give the Rank and File workers a 2% raise and tell them to be happy because these are lean times and then give department heads a larger raise.

One more thing : The road department budget is being cut big time !

Just a note: These are recommended raises right now, the raises could be higher or lower when the budget is finalized		   Update: 9-28-2006  The above mentioned raises are already in effect as they were negotiated last year in the fall. The first past of the raise came before 2006 started and the second half of the raise came in June of 2006 so the budget just shows the effect of the raise compared to what the county paid out at the beginning of 2005.
These raises and others that department heads received were given to them after a comparative study was done with other similar size counties to bring them up to parity.
