Ferguson Rock Slide Update July 14

Current Situation: The Ferguson Rockslide Incident, located on the Sierra National Forest in the Merced River Canyon, still remains active. Smaller size rocks continue to fall on a periodic basis. USFS field observers continue monitoring the slide mass 24 hours a day and emergency response communications are in place to report any catastrophic movement or river inundation. The geology report and the multi-agency response plan are available on the forest website (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sierra/conditions).

A temporary emergency solution providing access around the rockslide has been approved and is currently being implemented. Teichert Construction has been contracted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to complete the work. Construction of the downstream bridge has begun with concrete being poured into the bridge footings this week. Roadbed improvements to Incline Road area are also continuing. Phase One of this work is projected to be completed by the end of July. Phase One includes only the construction of the downstream bridge, with one-way traffic crossing back to the west side of the river on the Foresta Bridge. Access to the roadway during this time will likely be limited to several hours in the morning and evening, and, due to length and accessibility restrictions.

Meanwhile, Mariposa, Midpines, El Portal, and Yosemite National Park visitor and information centers, businesses, and accommodations are all OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Commercial rafting companies remain open and continue to offer rafting trips seven days a week.

Road Closures and Special Orders: The Sierra National Forest, Bass Lake Ranger District, has an emergency area closure in effect along the Merced River. The closure begins along the Merced River known as the South Fork confluence to Ned’s Gulch. THIS ROCKSLIDE IS ACTIVE AND UNPREDICTABLE. Do not attempt to enter this extremely hazardous area. To keep the area and visitors safe CHP has been ticketing visitors in violation of the closure.

Rockslide Information: An Information Office is available next door to the Mariposa Visitor Center and is open to the public from 8 AM to 5 PM weekdays. Call 209-966-6174 for concerns and daily information or go to the incident website at http://inciweb.org.
