Kathy Christiansen

For a List Of The Featured Artists

Kathy Christiansen, a stained glass artist, is a new artist in Art Trails this year.  She has lived in Mariposa since 1998, but she and her husband built their retirement home here in 1978.  She became hooked on stain glass after her church members and friends decided to create stained glass window for their 85-year-old Lutheran Church.  There were 7 windows in all and they were 5 feet by 9 feet in size.  It was a very large undertaking, but with the help of many people, they were able to complete the project.  Kathy designed most of the windows and also taught classes to help defray the cost of the windows.  The project was completed in time for the celebration of her husband’s 25th anniversary of his Ordination.

Kathy says, “Stained glass never gets boring because it is different with every project you do.  It is all about color and texture, not like the antique windows in Europe that were done to teach lessons and history.”  She uses patterns from wallpaper, paint colors, photos, pictures, tile as well as any source that could be adapted to the project.  She works from traditional to modern art and works closely with clients creating custom pieces for their home.  Kathy not only creates leaded stained glass for churches, but also for individuals to put in their doors and windows.  She also creates hummingbird feeders and assorted stained glass objects for nurseries, wineries, shops and galleries.
