Selected Highlights For September, 26, 2006
Leroy Radanovich explains to the
Mariposa County Board Of Supervisors and the public on how large Mariposa County was at one time. To the right of the charts
is a photograph of a butterfly that Charles Philips photographed. |
| Ken Gosting of Transportation Involves Everyone, announced to the
board that the Butterfly Bicentennial Coalition had been formed to celebrate the 200th anniversary since the "butterfly" name
had been given to this area thanks to Father Pedro Munoz on September 27,1806 as he and others explored the area now
known as Mariposa. Charles Philips brought in a gorgeous photo of a butterfly to represent "Las Mariposas" Leroy Radanovich then gave a brief history of Mariposa County to the Board Of Supervisors and the public. They are all part of a delegation that headed to Fresno as Fresno celebrated it's Sesquintennial to give a presentation on Mariposa street in Fresno of the 200 years of the naming of "Las Mariposas' They also took with them a signed book about the History of the Courthouse in Mariposa by Mr. Radanovich and Mr. Pinkerton and a letter signed by Board Of Supervisors Chairman Lee Stetson. After this presentation was over, the public had a chance to get up and speak about whatever they wanted to. One resident wanted to remind the board that the next Fire Chief has to work and get along with the people who volunteer at the fire station as they are not employees. He recommended a screening committee to select the next fire chief. Supervisor Bob Pickard mentioned that the County should get on board and recommend the passage of Proposition 1A and 1B for the election in November. Supervisor Janet Bibby mentioned that Mariposa County ranchers can now apply for heat related damages that they may have suffered this summer. Mariposa was not included in the original list of counties available for heat damages. A contract was approved with Chabin Concepts For about $36,000 when the package is completed. What are they going to provide for that amount of money ? They will develop a county wide economic development strategic plan ! Janet Bibby wanted to know how this correlated with the General Plan as they were coming on so late to the game. She was assured that there would be no problems. We wonder if any contact was made with other communities that Chabin Concepts had a contract with to see if they were happy with what they recieved for their money. |
After lunch the board was back in session to discuss adopting the final
budget. Supervisor Janet Bibby said that with the cuts to the road and tourism budget that hopefully mid year the county will have increased revenues and that some of the funding can be restored. Apparently at last Fridays budget hearings some last minute additions in expenditures were submitted to the board. One of these was giving $75,000 more to the Red Cloud Library. Thus giving the total account $210,000 for the library. Supervisor Lyle Turpin who represents this district said "It makes good business sense" instead of paying rent. Janet Bibby was upset that this request came in on Friday afternoon during the last hour of budget hearings. After it was said and done the board voted 3-2 for spending this additional money with Supervisor Janet Bibby and Lee Stetson opposed. A member of the audience said to the board hire more deputies not build a library We were first on board with spending this money, but after finding out that this library is only open 15 hours a week, we changed our mind on spending this amount of money at this time. Also another late Friday afternoon request was for $200,000 out of the tobacco fund for three patrol vehicles. This fund was supposed to be an emergency fund. After this money is taken out the fund will have dwindled down to$300,000. Lyle Turpin said this fund should increase with money throughout the year. As the vote on this went down the final count was 4-1 with Janet Bibby opposed. Additional monies for the jail of $9,500 and $200. for the senior wood program was approved unanimously. As the vote was coming on accepting the final budget, Interim CAO Mike Coffield wanted to make it known that the department heads did not play any games with him on coming up with their own individual budget cuts they were responsible for. Supervisor Janet Bibby also stated that she would like to vote no for the budget because of the last minute budget requests but would vote for the budget "for the betterment of the community". When all was said and done the budget was approved unanimously. When will the public get a look at this budget? Around November or so, when it is printed up. |
