For a List Of The Featured Artists 2006

Rick Uebner, a fabulous ceramic artist, is always testing new formulas for high fire and raku glazes.  He is continually trying to find exuberant and complimentary colors for his pots.  He is influenced by his travels with his wife Jetty to foreign lands such as Ireland, Bali, Mexico, Costa Rica and Italy as well as their travels around the United States.

His goal is to enjoy the art of creating while exploring new textures and shapes, and share these experiences with friends and family.  He says, “Opening up the kiln is just like Christmas.  After 12 hours of firing to 2350 degrees and a 24-hour cool down, you never know what you’re going to get when you open up the door.  Each piece is unique and has a story to tell.  The final step of presenting it to the public and finding it an appreciative home is always rewarding as well as fun.”

With the addition of their third kiln, Rick now enjoys the excitement of the raku process.  Following the ancient tradition of the Japanese, the firing process is quick, spontaneous, and a lot of fun to share with friends.  He creates a colorful variety of ceramic art from bowls and platters to tiles and sculptures.

Rick received his B.A. from Knox College, Illinois in 1967 and then spent two years in Colombia, South America with the Peace Corps.  The experiences and friends that he made there changed his life and his direction.  When he returned to the U.S., he got his teaching credential and began studying clay with Bruce Mac Dougal in Santa Cruz.

In 1971 Rick opened a pottery show in the Sierra Foothills of California near Yosemite.  Rick also taught pottery classes at the Merced Community College.  He continued studying clay under Larry Anderson of Fresno, while building their dome home in the country where he takes his inspirations from the landscapes, hills, mountains, wildflowers, and grass fields.

Rick is a returning artist to Art Trails this year and his site promises to be a wonderful experience along the Trail.
