Sierra Art Trails - October, 2006
Ruth Burney

One of our great new artists this year is Ruth Burney. She has been a resident of Mariposa County for 33 years. During this time she owned art and antiques businesses and was owner and managing editor of the Mariposa Gazette. She says, “My earliest recollection of an “art experience” was when I was preschool age in Napa. I found that the clean smooth lid on my mother’s wooden box collection made a perfect ground for a watercolor rendition of a blue horse. To my surprise – it wasn’t well received. “
Ruth then added, “I worked primarily in oils and pen and ink after I finished college, but eventually Carol Shockley and I attended a watercolor workshop, sponsored by the Sierra Artists, featuring Jan Burnman. That sparked a new love and challenge that has kept me painting and exploring for many years. Recently I have rediscovered the rich and flexible beauty of oils. It can compare to re-igniting an old friendship. While I do love the flowing and blending aspects of transparent watercolors, for me, oils are much more forgiving. Perhaps as I “mature,” I can use more forgiveness!”
