Ferguson Rockslide Monitoring
| Beginning Monday, October 16, the USDA Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey will install
monitoring devices on the Ferguson Rockslide in the Merced Canyon. The monitoring devices will include 3-dimensional global
positioning satellite (GPS) measuring devices. Data transmitted from the monitoring devices will provide information about the the rockslide movement, speed of movement and direction. Repeated measurements can show whether movement is slowing or accelerating. Monitoring will also include geophones which provide direct measurement of sound produced by ground movement or fracturing. Three 200-lb platforms with instrumentation will be airlifted by helicopter on to the rockslide on Wednesday, Oct. 18th. The locations of these platforms will be based on field mapping and surveyed movement over the past few months.
