Mariposa County Board Of Supervisors
has a chance to make a change of policy and save the county taxpayers some money before it hires a new County Librarian.
Currently no changes have been made to the 5 years and health benefits policy for the dept. heads but the board changed it for new union employees back in January.
Will they change the policy before they hire the Librarian? We will wait and see !
Meanwhile sales tax is off 6.5 % for the county !  The roads were cut $300,000 in the last budget.

MARIPOSA COUNTY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT / BOARD OF TRUSTEES / BOARD OF EDUCATION AGENDA REGULAR MEETING - 3-15-2007

Mariposa County used to owe PERS about $10,000,000.  NOW that number is creeping
up toward $11,000,000 !! No recent payment has been made to reduce this amount even though all the departments took a 2% hit almost six months ago and roads were cut $300,000. Currently the county is Paying PERS 7.75 % interest on this money and the figure keeps ballooning skyward. Soon it looks like the county will be paying a $1,000,000 a year just in interest !
By the way, how are your roads?
Ask your County Supervisor what they are going to do about this now, not tomorrow !

The Board of Supervisors is going to extend their Tuesday, March 6th board meeting to reconvene at 6PM to listen and collect data from all Mariposa County businesses on how they have been affected by the rock slide. This special extended board meeting is in response to concerned citizens.

The Mariposa Board Of Supervisors save Money !!
On Tuesday the board had an offer to buy two hangars out at the airport for a total of $25,000, but they went along with staff recommendation to save the money and look at the matter again when the leases expire in 2014.

What a wild weekend as far as the weather we had!  Saturday 1.5 inches, followed up by 2.36 inches on Sunday with most of that happening between 5 and 6 in the morning. Flooded roads, swollen creeks, rocks and boulders on the roads creating driving hazards, it was a rain that we have been waiting for. Although it could have fallen a little slower for more ground absorption we will take all the rain and snow we can get !

Going against the Mariposa County CAO's recommendation yesterday, the Board of Supervisors granted raises to all department heads, with some getting bigger raises than others as Supervisor Bob Pickard and Supervisor Janet Bibby's 'System Of Raises'
falls into a re-adjustment phase. Dr. Mosher is knocking on the door of $100K a year with this re-adjustment.

A couple of jobs out at the county land fill that are now part time will be going full time. People working out there deserve to be full time with county benefits considering the work they do. A big tip of the hat to the dept. head who suggested this.

The Mariposa County Library is going high-tech as they will be offering free Wi-Fi in a few months inside and outside (Limited) the library if you have a Mariposa Library Card or stop inside and get a free tourist card.
With Saturday hours reinstated and now Wi-Fi, things just keep looking up at the
Library !!

Also in the News: Pioneer Market is in the planning  stages of adding a drive -through pharmacy in about a year and a half.

Remember the way the ordinance will be written is
Only prescription drugs can be handed through the window. Who will enforce this? What penalties will be handed out?
You need Nyquil, Advil or Aspirin with that prescription ?
Sorry, park your car and come on in.

January 2007 leaves us on a very dry note as only 1.62 inches of rain fell this month !  We can only hope February, March and April are above normal as so far we are under 9 inches of rain from July 1 to now and a normal water year is about 30 inches by the end of June !
Just a question. How would global warming affect your well ?
How deep can you go?
How deep are your pockets ?

One of our local residents Richard Bernard just received a liver transplant on January 24, 2007 at the UC San Francisco Medical Center.  He is doing well and should be heading back to Mariposa today.

Richard was a counselor at the Mariposa Counseling Center for many years and an inspiration to many in the county.

What are those black vertical stripes on the highways of Mariposa County and are they doing any good ?

It is a solution that CalTrans is experimenting with.
Apparently it is a product that is made up of a derivative of corn syrup and sodium chloride that is supposed to help melt the ice and snow, but from reports we are hearing it is not that effective. To read up on a similar product: Clear Path Products
