Footnotes from North County - February 2012 by Lyle Turpin, Mariposa County Supervisor District 2

CAL FIRE has officially notified Mariposa County that the dozer that has been stationed at the Coulterville CAL FIRE station for many years has been eliminated.  This dozer has been an essential safety item for our area and is almost always the first dozer on scene.  This has been the case numerous times. Governor’s cost savings? You bet. But, at what cost to us locally due to delayed dozer support from who-knows-where? CAL FIRE prides themselves on catching wildland fires under 10 acres in size 90% of the time.  I am sure this decision is coming from behind some desk in Sacramento. The result, unfortunately, is that the ten acre or less target will no longer be the norm.

Mariposa County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed Sundays as “Eat Local - Buy California Grown Day.” California has a rich heritage as one of the world’s most prolific agricultural regions and California foods are famous for their abundance, diversity, freshness and high quality.  California ranches and farms grew more than three hundred food products including: livestock, poultry, seafood, produce, grains and dairy products, valued at $35 billion each year. Buying California foods helps ensure that family ranches and farms will sustain their historic production systems, as well as the valuable land that grows crops and raises livestock.

The Environmental Community is in an all out effort to restrain the harvesting of timber products on Federal and private lands, as well as the grazing of livestock on Federal lands.

The livestock industry is the sole survivor of our founding industries.  Our federal and state governments do not always know best.

Our Mariposa County Ag Commissioner produces an annual crop report that includes some very valuable information.

Peter Rei, our Public Works Director, has hired a Senior Engineer by the name of Bill McKenzie.  Mariposa County has a number of projects that are in need of engineering help.  Timing is everything when it comes to a successfully completed project.

Finally, we have received some much needed moisture.  The hills are turning green again.  Fire season is approaching real soon.  Establish or add to those defensible areas around your homesteads.  Use good judgment and stay safe. Everyone is an asset to our communities.
