David L. Hoffman
Photography

David HoffmanDuring my high school and college years, drawing and photography shared my attentions as graphic arts of choice.  As time went on, I was increasingly moved by the work of photographers whose work demonstrated a strong graphic sense, quality separate and apart from subject matter.

While in my own work I look to produce images that are compelling without regard to subject matter, I’m drawn mostly to the natural world.  Living in the central Sierra Nevada provides a wealth of material for my art.  Whether driving or hiking in the Sierra, my eyes are always searching for interesting patterns and compositions.

While I certainly don’t pass up the opportunity to photograph grand scenes in the California landscape when the situation is right, I am more often drawn to the quieter, more intimate scenes that often command little notice.

Artist Bio:

Growing up in California, David Hoffman’s vacations were often spent in some of the more scenic areas of the California coast and of the Sierra Nevada.  Those vacations introduced him to the varied landscapes of his home state.  With his college years came backpacking trips into the high Sierra – always with a folding camera of some sort along for the ride.

After completing undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of California at Davis, David settled in Tulare County at the base of the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada. Despite the proximity of beautiful Sierra, other responsibilities and interests for many years kept him from pursuing photography in a truly serious way.  In 2006, he left the world of regular workdays and moved into the Mountains near Yosemite National Park with his wife, painter Charlotte Hoffman, to concentrate on his work in landscape and nature photography.

David is drawn to the natural world.  Not necessarily to the grand scenes of the California landscape, but often to quiet, more intimate scenes that are often bypassed without notice.  His emphasis is not on subject matter, but on the visual, and sometimes emotional, impact of an image.  His photographs may encourage the viewer to take a closer look at the world around them…to notice the rich imagery in our surroundings that so often slips by unnoticed and unappreciated.
