mariposa county air quality august 18 2017
LAST UPDATED: Aug 19, 2017 @ 06:45 AM

August 19, 2017 - The Mariposa County Air Pollution Control District has issued an Air Quality Alert for smoke impacts from the South Fork wildfire in Mariposa county.

This alert applies to the area in and around the community of Wawona.

This Air Quality Alert is in effect until Monday afternoon, August 21st.

Exposure to particle pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, cause asthma attacks and acute bronchitis and increase the risk of respiratory infections.

Residents are advised to use caution as conditions warrant.

People with existing heart or lung disease should either leave the area or shelter in place.

Sheltering in place should be considered only if a room free of particle pollution is available.

Additionally, older adults and children should avoid exposure including outside activities or heavy exertion as conditions dictate.

For additional information, go to http://www.mariposacounty.org/index.aspx?nid=1434 or call (209)966-2220.

  • Use common sense. If it looks smoky outside it’s probably not a good time to go for a run. And it’s probably not a good time for your children to play outdoors.
  • If you have a heart or lung disease, if you are an older adult, or if you have children, talk with your doctor about whether, and when, you should leave the area.
  • If you decide to remain:
    • Consider staying indoors to avoid breathing the smoke particles.
    • Run your air conditioner, if you have one.
    • Keep the fresh air intake closed, and the filters clean, to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. Note: if you don’t have an air conditioner, staying inside with the windows closed may be dangerous in extremely hot weather. In these cases, seek alternative shelters.
    • A swamp cooler will not provide this protection, and will pull in the smoky air from outside.
    • “Masks” (especially surgical masks or wet bandanas) will not protect your lungs. If the smoke is that irritating to you, the best option is to remain indoors or temporarily re-locate.
