Honor the American Flag on Flag Day

On Thursday, June 14th, American Legion Post 567 will once again host a Flag Retirement Ceremony in honor of Flag Day, which falls within National Flag Week.  This is a time when Americans should reflect on the foundations of our nation. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days.  Americans also remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice, and observe the nation’s unity. On this day, the U.S. Army also celebrates their Birthday, as June 14th was the day the Nations Leaders established the Continental Army to defend this great country.

There is a strict protocol for retiring “The Flag”, and we are proud to have Boy Scout Troop 94, the Girl Scouts, the VFW and local dignitaries as our guests to help celebrate this great day.  The ceremony will be held at Steve’s Sportsmans Café, located at 3441 Woodland Dr., in Mariposa.  Al Handy and Ken Davis will serve as Master of Ceremonies, with the event starting promptly at 6:00 P.M.  Arrive early, bring a chair and pay your respects to what our flag stands for.  The American Legion will be giving out Flag Etiquette booklets and educational coloring books for the youngsters, along with hand held flags and patriotic magnets.

We must not forget what our Flag stands for, and as 97-year-old Jack Womer, a WWII Army Ranger and Paratrooper said in his book, he fears, as do many Veteran’s, that Americans will forget how hard we have fought and the sacrifices we’ve made to preserve our freedom.  That people tend to take the accomplishments of previous generations for granted and don’t take the time to learn.  This is truer in today’s fast paced electronic world, so spend some time on Friday evening June 14th to remember and pay tribute, as Mariposa is one community that does not forget.
