June 15, 2018 - SACRAMENTO – California’s unemployment rate held steady at 4.2 percent in May –tying the record low set during April in a series dating back to the beginning of 1976 – while the state’s employers added 5,500 nonfarm payroll jobs, according to data released today by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two surveys. California has now gained a total of 2,899,900 jobs since the economic expansion began in February 2010.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, while the nation’s employers added 223,000 nonfarm payroll jobs.

In May 2017, the state’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. The unemployment rate is derived from a federal survey of 5,100 California households.

Nonfarm payroll jobs in California totaled 17,089,500 in May, according to a survey of businesses that is larger and less variable statistically. The survey of 71,000 California businesses measures jobs in the economy. The year-over change, May 2017 to May 2018, shows an increase of 306,000 jobs (up 1.8 percent).

EMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT IN CALIFORNIA

The federal household survey, done with a smaller sample than the survey of employers, shows an increase in the number of employed Californians over the year. It estimates the number of Californians holding jobs in May was 18,536,000, a decrease of 7,000 from April, and up 200,000 from the employment total in May of last year.

The number of unemployed Californians was 808,000 in May – down by 7,000 over the month, and down by 132,000 compared with May of last year.

PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT DETAIL (SEASONALLY ADJUSTED)

EDD’s payroll employment report (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 17,089,500 in May, a net gain of 5,500 jobs from April. This followed a revised gain of 25,600 jobs in April.

Month-over Job Gains

Four of California’s eleven industry sectors added a total of 12,900 jobs in May. Leisure and hospitality reported the largest increase with a gain of 7,900 jobs, followed by professional and business services (up 2,500), information (up 2,200) and other services (up 300). Manufacturing reported no change over the month.

Month-over Job Losses

Six of California industries reported job losses over the month. Construction reported the largest decrease with a loss of 2,900 jobs, followed by trade, transportation and utilities (down 1,800) and educational and health services (down 1,100). Other industries with job declines over the month were financial activities, government and mining and logging.

Year-over Job Gains

In a year-over-year comparison (May 2017 to May 2018), nonfarm payroll employment in California increased by 306,000 jobs (a 1.8 percent increase).

Ten of California’s eleven industry sectors added a total of 307,600 jobs over the year. The largest job gains were in educational and health services, up 74,100 jobs (a 2.8 percent increase), leisure and hospitality, up 51,300 (a 2.6 percent increase) and construction, up 50,000 (a 6.2 percent increase). Other sectors adding jobs over the year were professional and business services, trade, transportation and utilities, government, information, manufacturing, financial activities and mining and logging.

Year-over Job Losses

Only one industry sector posted job declines over the year, other services, down a total of 1,600 jobs.

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CLAIMS (NOT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED)

In related data, the EDD reported that there were 337,974 people receiving regular Unemployment Insurance benefits during the May survey week. This compares with 390,362 in April and 354,371 in May of last year. At the same time, new claims for Unemployment Insurance were 41,762 in May, compared with 40,848 in April and 38,252 in May of last year.
