FOBL logoAn old proverb says “April showers bring May flowers” and this year is no exception. At an Oakhurst Library Workshop on Saturday, April 30, Bakersfield resident Carla Hyatt will shower participants with all the information they need to make some special origami flowers just in time for Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. The workshop is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Oakhurst Library, 49044 Civic Circle.

Hyatt, the sister of Oakhurst Library Branch Manager Dale Rushing, has presented themed origami workshops in past years at the library and they have always “been a hit” with local participants, said Rushing.

A retired junior high school math teacher, Hyatt used origami in her classes as a way to teach important math concepts like fractions and geometry to her students.

Hyatt said an important result of incorporating the ancient art of paper-folding into her math lessons, was that students also learned to “pay attention and follow directions” while experiencing the “hands-on” process of doing something themselves.

Children and adults aged 11 and older are invited to participate in the class which is limited to the first 40 people to pre-register by calling the library at (559) 683-4838. All supplies will be provided. Students will make flowers which they can take with them when they leave the class. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library (FOBL).

The workshop will be held in the Oakhurst Library’s Community Room. For more information, call the library phone number above or visit: oakhurstfobl.com.

Hyatt will present the origami workshop later in the day at the North Fork Library from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The library address is 32908 Road 222 and the phone number is (559) 877-2387.
