Students entering grades 1st through 8th
will learn to inform, persuade and entertain through writing

UC Merced Writting smMERCED, Calif. – The University of California, Merced Writing Project’s Bobcat Young Writers Academy will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., June 20 through June 30, Monday through Thursday at the UC Merced Campus, located at 5200 N. Lake Rd. in Merced.  Students entering grades 1st through 8th in fall 2016 are encouraged to apply. This summer marks the Bobcat Young Writers Academy’s seventh consecutive year running. The first student in family costs $215, and each additional student in family costs $190 each.

During the program, students will write daily, share, discuss, revise, and edit their writing with other young writers — all under the guidance of UC Merced Writing Project Teacher Consultants. In doing so, they begin to understand the difference between writing for self and writing for a reader. Students will build their stamina as writers through daily journaling and the teacher will guide them to explore some of the many ways writing is used to inform, entertain, persuade, and reflect. In one week, students develop the habits of good writers with their eyes and minds focused on what it means to write and revise for a reader.

The UC Merced Writing Project is a collaborative program of  UC Merced and Merced County school districts, dedicated to improving writing and the teaching of writing at all grade levels and in all disciplines. It is a growing network of exemplary classroom teachers, kindergarten through university, who conduct professional development programs for teachers and administrators and engage in their own professional development through continued reading, writing, and research. UC Merced is a site of the California Writing Project and an affiliate of the National Writing Project
