August 24, 2016 - Coarsegold– Fire Investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit determined CalFireequipment use as the cause of the Broken Fire.

The Broken Fire started on July 4, 2016, and was caused by a Bulldozer striking a rock in dry grass. This fire ultimately burned 102 acres of vegetation north of Coarsegold, near the Broken Bit.

90% of all fires in California are caused by people; the majority of these fires are caused by operating equipment incorrectly, without the proper clearance, and or at the wrong time of day. CAL FIRE would like to remind residents that the potential for large destructive fires only increases as we approach fall.

Fire danger in the state of California continues to be above normal levels. Significantly dry conditions are present due to historically low precipitation and high temperatures. Everyone has the responsibility to prevent human-caused wildfires. Please use extreme caution when traveling on highways, working with equipment and while enjoying the outdoors.

We can all make a difference in reducing human-caused fires. Remember One Less Spark- One Less Wildfire.
