Sierra Foothill Charter School third and fourth graders had the best time with local artist Penny Otwell on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

For the last several weeks, Teena Starchman's students had been learning about the artist as part of their preparation for the upcoming Gateway Expressions art contest at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite. During her visit with the class, Penny told students more about herself, her process, and led them in a fun imagination creation art lesson, in which she drew a line and saw where it took her without an idea in mind. Students were able to see Penny paint and then were able to paint with Penny, creating their own imagination creations. To help get students inspired, Penny brought many pieces of her artwork for students to see. Penny also brought postcards for students so they could take a piece of her art home. To top it all off, Penny gave the class an original painting she created to hang up in their classroom. It was a fantastic art day for the class!
Artist Penny Otwell brought many examples of her work to discuss with the students and help inspire them for their own painting of the day.
Students watched Penny paint. She talked to them about what she was doing and why.
Students created their own imagination creations and received words or encouragement and praise from artist Penny Otwell.
Penny brought many postcards and stickers for students to choose from so they could take a piece of her artwork home. They had a hard time deciding!
