February 22, 2017 - MERCED – With dry weather forecasted in the coming days, emergency crews will continue to remove debris from waterways, repair merced county logolevees when necessary, and prepare sandbags to mitigate impacts from the ongoing weather systems.

Officials are monitoring all waterways within the County. This monitoring effort includes the Eastside Bypass of the San Joaquin River as well as releases from Don Pedro Reservoir, due to the fact that the Merced, Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers converge near the northwestern edge of the County and have the potential to impact communities in the Stevinson area.

Emergency service officials are working collaboratively in Merced, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties in order to mitigate potential impacts along the San Joaquin River and its tributaries.

Merced Irrigation District is continuing to release up to 7,000 CFS from the primary outlet at the base of New Exchequer Dam. Those releases are being directed by the Army Corps of Engineers as is normal during floodcontrol months when the reservoir exceeds about 67 percent of capacity.

Currently, the reservoir is approximately 94 percent full and 12 feet from its maximum elevation. Lake McClure has a maximum operating level of 867 feet. In addition to Lake McClure’s primary release system at the base of New Exchequer Dam, the reservoir also has two spillways: a gated spillway is able to provide controlled releases if needed. A second ungated spillway can also be used for emergency flow releases. MID has no immediate plans to use its gated spillway at this time.

Dry weather is forecasted to begin Wednesday and continue through Saturday before additional rainfall arrives in Merced County.

Residents should use the break in the rain to sign up for the Merced County Emergency Alert System (www.countyofmerced.com/alert), take note of sandbag locations (www.countyofmerced.com/sandbags), and clean out gutters and culverts around homes if necessary.
