Mariposa resident Mr. Edgar Uebner found deceased in the Merced River Canyon

Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies mentioned in an Email that Mr. Uebner was found a few hundred feet from the trailhead of the Hites Cove Trail on the South Fork of the Merced River at Highway 140. As of right now no information is being released as far as a time line and no information is being released about clothing that was found at the scene. Right now investigators have not placed another person with Mr. Uebner at the time of his death and the autopsy results will be released in a couple of weeks.

On Thursday, February 16, 2012, at about noon, Mr. Edgar Uebner (68 yr. old Mariposa resident) was reported as a missing adult to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office. During this investigation, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Mariposa Area California Highway Patrol. A hiker on the Savage/Lundy trail had located personal belongings of Mr. Uebner’s alongside the trail and later turned the items over to a CHP Officer in Mariposa.
Mariposa Sheriff Investigators retrieved the items and spoke to the finder, who reported locating the items while hiking the trail with family at about 1:00 p.m. the same day, Thursday, February 16th. That find led investigators to the Savage/Lundy trailhead, where the South Fork of the Merced River flows into the Merced River on Highway 140. Upon arrival, Mr. Uebner’s vehicle was also located and found to be secured in the trailhead’s parking area.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team responded to assist investigators in searching the area. At about 9:30 p.m. the Search and Rescue team located Mr. Uebner. Mr. Uebner was found deceased near the South Fork river’s edge, at the bottom of a steep cliff like face, below the Savage Lundy trail.
