Letter to the Editor - Our Town

One of the reasons I moved here about 8 years ago was for that ‘small town’ feel, the sense of community, help thy neighbor etc. I came from the Bay Area where there was none of that. Lately, I am sorry to say that I have not been seeing much of that. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the country and it seems that we have forgotten that. Before we moved here and would come up for weekends to visit, we would come in on 140 and as we entered town I would get such a sense of excitement like I was entering another world. That small town charm and everyone here was just so friendly and nice compared to the hustle and bustle of the city. In these hard times with the news bringing us down and all the ‘politics’ out there throwing mud at each other, I still feel we have our town, our safe haven in a world gone mad. But lately I have been seeing it around here also…Nooooo!!

If we are all so bored that all we can do is look for things to complain about, maybe we should put down the pen and get off of the keyboard and get out there and do something, help somebody, just get out there and make a difference! Let’s make this one of those towns that is like entering a different world, a world where a handshake, a smile or your word still means something. We are a beautiful, diverse, absolutely wonderful small town, so let’s make the ‘attraction’ not focus on the fact that we are a stop on the way to Yosemite. Let’s make the attraction our sense of community, small town charm and wonderful shops. Let’s show the people that live here and visit that this is a fantastic place to raise a family, put down roots and maybe even start a business. All of the pieces are here, beautiful town, scenery, clean air and yes, beautiful wonderful people!! We have the land, resources, shops and people to be a very self sufficient resourceful little town. Let’s work together to make this town and example of how wonderful life can be in a small town. We are not just a bunch of people living in the same area, we are truly a community that can weather any storm and make things better if we just work together.

So this year Santa, although I would sincerely love world peace…I would be thrilled with a little hometown peace on earth and goodwill towards each and every one of us!
Merry Christmas!
