Butterfly Seminar by Linda Gast

Featured speakers, Yvonne Sarazin & Shelly Dulcich talked about the  Life Cycle of  Painted Lady Butterflies

The Mariposa Elementary School is one of the many schools that are participating in the caring for and raising of butterflies for the annual Mariposa Butterfly Festival. As the students filed into the multi-purpose room they were able to look at the larva in different stages. There was happy chatter, but once Yvonne Sarazin began to talk about the process the kids were very attentive. Yvonne showed the students a full color picture chart that showed the different stages the larva would go through before they become butterflies. The students and teachers listened carefully because they knew that they were going to be responsible for the care of the larva for the next few weeks. Some of the expressions on the kids faces were priceless. A butterfly pavilion was on display so the audience could see where the butterflies would be placed after turning into a chrysalis before being released.

The whole process, from egg to mature butterfly, takes about 4 to 5 weeks. Yvonne explained all the steps in the life cycle to the Mariposa Elementary School students and their teachers with help from Shelly Dulcich. Dell Knell showed the students the small larva and larger caterpillars as they came in the room.

At the close of the program each teacher was given a butterfly pavilion and enough larvae for each student in their class.  Written instructions  on the care of the butterflies were also handed out to teachers.
