Sonora,
California located at the junction of Highway 49 and Highway 108 became a city in 1851.Many thousands of people came to the
Sonora area with the dream of gold riches on their mind. Others decided the riches were to supply the miners with things that
they needed. The gold fields around Sonora made many of the early miners many thousands of dollars. Some saved
but many others spent freely, paying there way with gold dust by weighing it on scales inside the merchants business. Many
thought the gold would never run out, but after awhile the easy placer gold (gold not mined but found on top of the ground)
was all taken by the thousands of miners in the area. Gold can still be found today by working mining claims or certain
areas of public lands where a person can still pan for gold just like the miners of old. Dreams can still come true in Sonora,
California. The history of Sonora can still be found today with many grand houses of the old days still visible, some grandly
restored. Mark Twains cabin is north of town .Also downtown Sonora one can find Saint James Episcopal Church. The above
