2023 Homicide Investigation Update
May 27, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials announce the sentencing of Kenneth McNally
(42) to 216 years to life in state prison for the 2023 murder of 59‑year‑old Samuel Holthaus (pictured) in Harbison Canyon.
On September 3, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 1200 block of Harbison Canyon Road in unincorporated El Cajon after receiving a report of a suspicious death. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased man with trauma to the upper body. The victim was later identified as Samuel Holthaus.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and initiated a comprehensive investigation. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the manner of death to be homicide.
Through investigative efforts, Kenneth McNally (42) was identified as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested by the Sheriff’s Fugitive Task Force. The Homicide Unit conducted an extensive investigation, dedicating significant time and resources to the case.
A jury had previously found McNally guilty on all charges including first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a semi‑automatic firearm, shooting at an inhabited occupied structure/vehicle, and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.
On Friday, May 22, 2026, McNally was sentenced to 216 years to life in prison.
