Officer-Involved Shooting on Highway 50 

September 9, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Monday, September 7, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol requested assistance with an active vehicle pursuit traveling eastbound on Highway 50 near Hazel Ave. East Patrol deputies, as well as a Sheriff’s K9 deputy, responded to assist. Deputies deployed tire deflation devices during the pursuit in an attempt to safely stop the vehicle.

The pursuit eventually traveled onto westbound Highway 50, west of Hazel Ave., where the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was struck by gunfire. Personnel from the California Highway Patrol, the Citrus Heights Police Department, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office were at the scene when the shooting occurred.

Emergency medical aid was immediately provided to the suspect. The suspect was transported by the Fire Department to a local area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No deputies or officers were injured during this incident.

The investigation into this officer-involved shooting is still ongoing and being conducted by the California Highway Patrol. A parallel investigation will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division. An independent review of the incident will also be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. In accordance with the Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
