High Speed Rail

May 17, 2019 - Washington - Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Thursday issued the following statement on the announcement that the Department of Transportation will deobligate nearly $1 billion in funding for high speed rail in California:

“The decision by the Department of Transportation to cancel nearly $1 billion in funds for the California High Speed Rail project is deeply concerning.

“I agree with Governor Newsom that California should take this decision to court and I thank him for responding so quickly. These are funds that Congress appropriated and the president obligated. They cannot legally be withdrawn without good cause.

“The Trump administration has no basis for claiming that California has failed to satisfy its end of the grant agreement. California remains committed to completing a statewide high speed rail system.

“The Department of Transportation should fulfil its own legal obligations and continue working with the California to complete the high speed rail project as it committed to do.”
