April 24, 2026 - Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee on
Oversight and Reform, released the following statement after Oversight Chairman James Comer revealed that some Republican Members of the Committee are considering supporting President Trump pardoning convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for her cooperation in the Epstein investigation.
“It’s outrageous that Republicans on the Oversight Committee are considering a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell. She is a sexual abuser who facilitated the rape of women and children. This is a shameful way to treat survivors. Oversight Democrats are united in opposing any pardon,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
In February 2026, after months of defying a bipartisan subpoena, Ghislaine Maxwell appeared before the Oversight Committee and invoked the Fifth Amendment, refusing to testify during her deposition. In October 2025, the Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal of her conviction. In July 2025, following her meeting with President Trump’s former personal attorney, then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Maxwell was transferred to a cushy minimum-security women’s prison in Texas. Maxwell’s attorney has publicly stated that Maxwell wants clemency from President Trump in exchange for her testimony.
