May 9, 2026 – Mariposa County Health & Human Services officials report that stories are out from our friends around the county and in Yosemite that they are seeing snakes out and about, so we thought it would be a good time to share some important rattlesnake safety tips!

First: Be Aware!

- Pay attention to your surroundings. When you are hiking, be aware of where you place your hands and feet.

- Wear boots and long pants if you are in an area with snakes.

- Know how to identify a rattle snake: triangular-shaped head, spotted body, and the distinctive rattle on the tail.

- Remember, the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake is the most common in our area. They are wild animals and part of the natural ecosystem.

If You Do Get Bitten:

- Don't panic.

- If possible, get to a vehicle, walk do not run,

- Drive to the nearest emergency room or call 911 to get you there.

Don't forget - John C. Fremont Healthcare District can treat bites! They are prepared for the season with plenty of anti-venom.

Do NOT:

- Touch, disturb or agitate a snake. They live here and can become aggressive when they feel they are being attacked.

- Reach into or enter tall grass, piles of leaves, or areas snakes like to hide without checking first. If you can avoid the area, do so.

- Cut the bite and attempt to suck out the venom. Not everything in the movies is true!
