June 5, 2026 – Mariposa County Sheriff's Office continues to receive concerns from residents about growing transient encampments, illegal dumping, unleashed dogs, trespassing, theft, property damage, shopping carts and debris in creek beds, and the pollution of our waterways and public spaces. We hear those concerns, and we share them.

Our deputies, county staff, and community volunteers have spent countless hours addressing trash accumulation, environmental damage, and public safety issues that affect everyone who calls Mariposa County home. The impact extends beyond unsightly conditions, it affects our natural resources, wildlife, businesses, private property owners, and the overall quality of life in our community.

Enough is Enough. Moving forward, the Sheriff's Office will be taking a more proactive enforcement approach. Where authorized by law, deputies will be citing individuals for violations involving illegal dumping, littering, trespassing, public nuisance violations, unleashed animals, and other applicable offenses. Our goal is not to criminalize poverty, but to hold individuals accountable for behavior that damages our community and threatens public health and safety.

We have also observed that many individuals congregate in areas where they can access open public Wi-Fi. If you are experiencing issues around your business or property and provide unsecured Wi-Fi access, you may wish to consider adding password protection and reviewing your network settings.

Mariposa County belongs to all of us. Protecting it requires partnership between residents, businesses, county agencies, and law enforcement. We remain committed to addressing these issues while treating all individuals with dignity and enforcing the law fairly and consistently.

As the song says, "Country roads, take me home..." Let's work together to make sure the roads, waterways, and public spaces that lead us home are places we can all continue to be proud of.

If you observe illegal dumping, trespassing, vandalism, or other criminal activity, please report it to the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office.

There was a time when "Country Roads" brought to mind the beauty of Mariposa County, our rolling hills, clean waterways, public lands, and the small-town way of life we all cherish.

Unfortunately, some of those country roads aren't looking so pretty these days.
