June 13, 2026 - SONORA, Calif. – Reflecting field operations in place for nearly ten years, the Mi-Wok/Summit Ranger District will now be known as the Sugar Pine Ranger District.
This administrative change reflects nearly a decade of shared leadership and coordinated operations between the two districts, whose offices are located just 14 miles apart. This action is specific to the Stanislaus National Forest and is not connected to any broader Forest Service reorganization efforts.
Visitors should expect continuity in services, programs, and access. The primary public office will remain the Summit Ranger Station in Pinecrest. The Mi-Wok office, closed to the public since 2018, will remain closed.
“The public should see very little change beyond the new district name,” said Acting District Ranger Andy Welsh. “This step simply aligns our organizational structure with how our teams have already been working together to serve the public.”
