September 2, 2026 – Mariposa County Sheriff's Office officials report that on July 26, 2026, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office responded to an area off Agua Fria Road following a report of potential human remains discovered by individuals exploring the area.

Sheriff’s Office personnel responded, conducted an investigation at the scene, and recovered the remains. The California Department of Justice also responded to assist with the investigation.

The remains were subsequently sent to the California Department of Justice for processing and assistance with identification. At this time, the identity of the individual has not been confirmed.

This remains an active Coroner’s investigation. Once a positive identification is made, the Sheriff’s Office will work with the individual’s next of kin and family before any identifying information is released publicly.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the need to protect its integrity, and out of compassion and respect for the individual and their family, no additional information will be released at this time.
