September 8, 2026 - SACRAMENTO, CA — Last week, AB 1896, jointly authored by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Assemblymember 
Mark González, was sent to the Governor's desk. If signed into law, this bill will be a first-in-the-nation policy that will disqualify anyone who has been previously engaged in baseless, cruel immigration enforcement activity from attaining a public service job in California.

"Time and time again, we have seen these agents show they are unwilling to stand up to unlawful orders," said Assemblymember Mark González. "These agents disgust me, and they have no place… no right to serve the public here in California. So, I am proud to stand with the Speaker in drawing a line— if you want to choose violence, if you choose to violate civil rights and follow blatantly racist orders from this oppressive federal administration, good luck finding a job here in the Golden State."
Cutting to the Point:
AB 1896 ensures our police officers, teachers, civil servants, social workers, judges, and school safety officers — all those we trust to keep our loved ones safe and protected — hold the same values of acceptance, peace, and tolerance for our diverse communities.
Since the start of President Trump's second term, immigration enforcement agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have been ordered to carry out aggressive, unchecked, and deadly military-style raids.
Instead of choosing peace, ICE agents publicly executed a mother of three and loving wife, Renée Nicole Good. They injured labor leader and activist David Huerta. Countless peaceful protesters have been abused, pepper-sprayed, sandbagged, or hit by immigration enforcement agents. Alex Pretti, a nurse, was shot in cold blood in the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They even kidnapped a child to use him as bait.
This bill will ensure killers, kidnappers, and those who instigate terror in our communities are not rewarded with a public paycheck.
