September 19, 2026 - The Sierra National Forest, in partnership with Grazing Solutions of Mariposa, California, is exploring the potential benefits of reducing wildfire risk through grazing with goats and sheep.

The first study began Thursday, September 17, along Beasore Road on the Bass Lake Ranger District, with the purpose of collecting production rate data for treatments using goats and sheep, compared to the cost effectiveness of hand crews or mechanical treatments.

Forest visitors may see goats grazing along the lower section of Beasore Road through the weekend.

In total, 173 animals are participating, including Spanish goats, Dorpers, and Navajo Churro sheep.

Pending the study’s outcomes, the goats and sheep may return for grazing treatments over larger areas on the Forest.
