October 11, 2022 - On January 2, 2022, officers assigned to the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC) received information on the location of 27-year-old Gabriel Mata. Mata, a known gang member, was wanted for a felony domestic violence charge and threated to shoot the victim and police. When officers arrived at the residence, located in the 5200 block of South Maple Avenue, they discovered Mata had fled to a nearby field. Officers and sheriff’s deputies located Mata and attempted to get him to peacefully surrender. During this time, a K-9 deputy from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department responded assist in Mata’s apprehension. Additional attempts were made to convince Mata to surrender, however he continued to refuse. The K-9 was deployed to apprehend Mata. As officers and deputies approached, two Fresno Police Department officers observed Mata repeatedly stabbing the K-9. Both officers discharged their department issued handguns.

Mata was struck by gunfire and survived his injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was later booked into the Fresno County jail on felony domestic violence charges.
