March 10, 2023 - WASHINGTON – Congressman Josh Harder (CA-9), a founding member of the Dads Caucus, and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21) led a bipartisan letter to US Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack calling on him to oppose the Biden Administration’s proposed rule to reduce the amount of milk available to WIC families.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides crucial support to low-income pregnant women and infants, and tens of thousands of families in the Central Valley depend on it.

“Setting San Joaquin families up for success means making sure our little ones have every opportunity to thrive,” said Rep. Harder. “Moms and their babies need nutritious food including milk to stay healthy. My daughter Lillian just turned one, and I’ll tell you this – her mom and I should be making the decisions of what she eats, not the government. The Department of Agriculture cannot move forward with this rule.”

In the letter, the lawmakers pointed out that the proposed rule would result in a substantial reduction in the maximum monthly allowance for milk through the WIC program and that this will exacerbate the crisis families are already facing with skyrocketing food prices.

Harder and Stefanik were joined by a bipartisan group of 26 colleagues in sending the letter.
