March 29, 2024 - Placer County Sheriff's Office officials report this past Monday, during an open court hearing, the Department of State Hospitals announced that they have a potential housing location in Placer County for Sexually Violent Predator William Stephenson.

The location they have identified is near tribal lands. Upon learning this, the United Auburn Indian Community (UAIC) released a statement firmly opposing William Stephenson's placement anywhere near their federally protected and sovereign lands. The UAIC expressed concern for their tribal members, particularly their women and children.

In strong support of the United Auburn Indian Community, Sheriff Woo stated the following: "I wholeheartedly support the position of the United Auburn Indian Community and feel the Department of State Hospitals should not ignore their opinions and concerns. Our government firmly recognizes the rights of the indigenous people of Placer County. I believe this placement location ignores those rights and disregards our tribe’s legitimate concerns.”

As a reminder, the state has not publicly disclosed the exact location of the proposed property. This lack of communication is just another example of the insensitive nature in which the Department of State Hospitals has handled this situation. Sheriff Woo has fought against the placement of this individual in our community for over two years, and he will continue to do so until a decision is made that is in the best interests of the welfare and safety of our entire community.
