Equipment Mechanic/Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Full-Time Position
$57,054.40 - $69,347.20 Annually
The Public Work's Department is hiring an Equipment Mechanic/ Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

DEFINITION
Equipment Mechanic
To perform skilled and semi-skilled work involved in the mechanical servicing, maintenance and repair of the County’s fleet of automotive and other equipment; to maintain simple records related to shop operations; and to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic
To perform skilled and semi-skilled work involved in the mechanical servicing, maintenance and repair of the County’s fleet of Fire Department vehicles and equipment, heavy construction equipment and other equipment; to maintain simple records related to shop operations; and to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Examples of Duties
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Equipment Mechanic
Conducts safety inspections on transit and passenger vehicles.
Diagnoses and repairs computer controlled systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspensions, drive train components, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, gasoline- and diesel-powered engines, HVAC systems, hydraulic systems on vehicles and light equipment.
Designs and installs emergency response equipment in vehicles.
Inspects and replaces tires as needed.
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance of all County vehicles and equipment.
Performs minor body work as needed, including painting.
Performs routine welding and fabrication work on vehicles and heavy equipment.
Makes and repairs snow chains for vehicles.
Performs field repairs of vehicles as necessary, including during adverse weather / environmental conditions.
Orders and picks up parts and supplies necessary for assigned maintenance and repair work.
Interacts with vehicle / equipment operators to help determine service and repair needs.
Operates hoists and overhead cranes.
Maintains garage, shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
Maintains accurate and complete work records.
Trains new mechanics as assigned.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic (In addition to the above)
Diagnoses and repairs computer controlled systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspensions, drive train components, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, gasoline- and diesel-powered engines, HVAC systems, hydraulic systems on Fire Department vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.
Repairs snowplow blades.
Overhauls gasoline- and diesel-powered engines.
Performs complex welding and fabrication work, including manufacturing special tools and equipment for the shop.
Minimum Qualifications
Both Equipment Mechanic and Heavy Equipment Mechanic:
Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Class “B” operator’s license is desirable. Under certain circumstances, the Human Resources Director may accept a valid driver’s license from another state if applicant acknowledges his/her intent to acquire a California driver’s license within three months by signing an acknowledgement form.
Equipment Mechanic:
Experience:
Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic:
Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy automotive and road construction equipment, trucks and automobiles.
