SDPD OIS - 11600 Angelique Street, San Diego 

March 26, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials report that they are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred this afternoon in the Scripps Ranch area. At approximately 12:09 p.m., San Diego Police Officers responded to a report of a male pointing a handgun at construction workers in the 11600 block of Angelique Street, San Diego. The suspect then pointed his firearm at a pest control worker. Fearing for his safety, the pest control worker locked himself in the back of his work truck to avoid injury. Due to the nature of this call and the pest control worker being locked inside of his truck, SDPD SWAT and Emergency Negotiations Officers were requested to assist.

San Diego Police Department Officers arrived on scene and noticed a 59-year-old white male suspect holding what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol in his hand. SDPD Officers gave commands for the suspect to drop the firearm, but the suspect did not follow their orders. SDPD officers set up containment, so the suspect was not able to threaten any other neighbors.

SDPD SWAT officers arrived and attempted to evacuate the pest worker. As SWAT officers approached the victim, the suspect pointed his firearm in the direction of officers. At that point, two SWAT snipers fired their rifles. The suspect suffered trauma to his upper body and unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured in the incident. A handgun was subsequently recovered near the male suspect at the scene. 

One officer involved in the shooting has been employed by the San Diego Police Department for approximately 17 years and is assigned to patrol at the Central Division and is a SWAT sniper. The second officer involved in the shooting has been employed by the San Diego Police Department for approximately 10 years and is assigned to patrol at the Mid City Division and is a SWAT sniper.  

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation.  At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s discharge of his firearm.
