July 2, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office officials report that on June 9, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call simply saying someone was shot inside the lobby of the Motel 6 located at 7407 Elsie Ave. Deputies responded and located a 21-year-old male in the lobby of the business with an apparent gunshot wound. Deputies immediately began performing life-saving measures on the victim and requested the Fire Department. Fire arrived on scene, and the victim was pronounced deceased. The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived. Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) began their investigation.

Based on witness statements and video footage, detectives identified the suspect as 22-year-old Matthew Arizaga. A warrant for murder was obtained for Arizaga on the same day. Detectives learned Arizaga fled to Las Vegas after the homicide. On June 15, 2026, Arizaga was taken into custody with assistance from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Arizaga was extradited to Sacramento and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on Monday night, where he remains ineligible for bail.
