Officer Involved Shooting in La Riviera

August 2, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Sacramento County ...approximately 9:00 a.m., our Communications Center received a call stating a transient subject, described as an adult male, was burglarizing the victim’s vehicle on the 9000 block of Folsom Blvd. When the victim attempted to get his items back from the suspect, the suspect pulled out a knife and threatened the victim. When deputies arrived on scene, the suspect had already fled. Deputies canvassed the area looking for the suspect. Deputies located abandoned property in the area, possibly belonging to the suspect, and were able to determine his identity based on the property.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., our Communications Center received a call reporting a burglary in progress on the 2600 block of Mackinaw Way. The homeowner had returned home to find a man matching the description of the previous robbery suspect inside his home. The suspect had the homeowner’s handgun and threatened to kill him, repeatedly pointing the weapon at the homeowner’s head. Fortunately, the homeowner was able to run from the residence and call 9-1-1. The suspect attempted to steal the homeowner’s vehicle but was unsuccessful. Instead, he stole his bicycle and fled.

Deputies arrived on scene and located the suspect fleeing on the stolen bicycle, with the stolen firearm in his hand. Deputies attempted to stop the suspect; however, he refused to comply. Deputies followed him from Grayling Way onto Westbound Barracuda Way. The suspect reached the end of the cul-de-sac and stopped at the locked gate. After abandoning the bicycle, he squeezed between the two gates and fled into the large parking lot. Deputies continued pursuing the armed suspect on foot.

When the suspect reached the fence at the end of the parking lot, he suddenly turned to face the deputies. Despite repeated commands to drop the firearm, the suspect instead raised the gun toward deputies. One deputy fired his rifle toward the suspect. During the officer-involved shooting, the suspect was struck and dropped his firearm. Deputies began providing emergency medical care, including applying a chest seal and a tourniquet, until Fire personnel arrived. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital, where he was taken into surgery. At the time of this release, the hospital advised he was out of surgery and recovering in stable condition.

Luckily, neither victim was injured by the suspect. No deputies were injured during this incident. At this time, investigators believe the victims were random and had no known connection to the suspect.

The investigation into this incident is still ongoing. It will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Office’s jurisdiction. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. In accordance with the Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
