Major Injury Traffic Collision 

August 9, 2026 – Riverside County Sheriff's Office officials report that on August 5, 2026, at 2:22 p.m., deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station responded to the 500 block of West 4th Street, Perris, regarding the report of a traffic collision involving a motorcycle. Upon arrival, deputies located the motorcyclist in the roadway with significant injuries. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.

The Perris Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. During the investigation, deputies determined the driver, later identified as Mauricio Cruz Cortez, a 61-year-old resident of Murrieta, was under the influence of a controlled substance. Cortez was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury.
