November 3, 2026 – Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles Police Department officials report that the (LAPD) Force Investigation
Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Central Division.
On October 31, 2026, at around 1:25 p.m., Central Patrol Division uniformed police officers responded to a radio call for a Robbery Suspect, at East 4th Street and Omar Street. Upon arrival, the officers were directed by an air unit to the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Bernard Deshawn Douglas. The officers contacted Douglas, who was armed with a metal pole, approximately four feet in length with a tree pruning shear attached to the end of it (no blade), and a tree branch approximately four feet in length, two inches in diameter.
Douglas refused to comply with the officers’ commands to drop the weapons; instead, he turned and faced the officers while raising the weapons above his head. The officers deployed 40mm rounds from their Less Lethal Launchers which were ineffective. Douglas advanced toward an officer and struck the officer in the left arm and left shoulder with the metal pole, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.
Douglas was struck by gunfire and attempted to walk away from the officers. An officer deployed his Taser causing Douglas to collapse onto the ground. Douglas was taken into custody without further incident. The officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived at scene and transported Douglas to a local hospital for medical treatment. The metal pole and tree branch were recovered at the scene and booked as evidence.
No community members were injured during this incident. The officer was treated at a local hospital for the injury sustained from this incident and released.
