SST LTRSeptember 24, 2018 - I had the pleasure of attending the debate between Jessica Morse (D. Pollock Pines), and Tom McClintock (R. Elk Grove), on Sunday afternoon and was delighted to be a part of democracy in action right here in Mariposa County.

Repeatedly throughout the 90 plus minute debate I heard our current 5 term Representative Tom McClintock refer to himself and the policies that he supports as being conservative and fiscally responsible. This is a narrative that I have heard repeated by Republicans across the land my entire adult life. Interestingly, the simple truth reveals this to be a fairy tale with tragic consequences for the everyday man and woman.

Ronald Reagan (revered by most Republicans), cut taxes, increased military spending exponentially, and tripled the federal deficit before leaving office. George H.W. Bush (who had previously referred to Reagan’s economic theories as “voodoo economics”), also failed to get a grip on deficit spending despite breaking his promise of “Read my lips, no new taxes!”

It wasn’t until Bill Clinton was elected (a Democrat), that we were able to achieve a balanced budget for the first time in decades. Unfortunately it didn’t take long for the incoming George W. Bush to blow this to pieces by immediately cutting taxes on the wealthiest Americans and launching us into two unfunded wars in Afghanistan (justifiable on the grounds of the attacks of 9/11), and Iraq (in search of the mysterious WMD’s).

We all know what happened at the end of 2008 as Bush walked out the door leaving an economic mess of epic proportion. Thankfully there was an incoming Democrat (Barack Obama), whose steadfast temperament allowed us to recover fully, and get back on the path of lower deficits.

In 2016 we elected Donald Trump (a Republican), and we immediately get huge tax cuts for the wealthy, more bloated military spending, and projected deficits into the trillions going forward. Doesn’t this all start to sound familiar?

It’s time to restore fiscal sanity in Washington D.C. by putting Democrats back in charge. We can start this November 6th by electing Jessica Morse to represent us in Congress. Republicans like Tom McClintock claim to be fiscally conservative, but unfortunately the facts tell another story.
