The action helps protect $28.3 million in public safety funds for communities across California

March 5, 2021 - SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra on Thursday applauded the federal government’s becerra official ca agdecision to withdraw a request made by the previous administration for the U.S. Supreme Court to review a case involving tens of millions of dollars in public safety funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) program. As a result of the withdrawal, an earlier appellate decision secured by California — affirming that immigration enforcement requirements attached by the Trump Administration to fiscal year 2017 Byrne JAG program funds were unlawful — remains in place. Today’s action helps protect $28.3 million in public safety funding used in criminal justice initiatives by communities across California.

“With the law and the facts on our side, we’ve been able to successfully hold the line to defend millions of dollars in public safety funds for our communities,” said Attorney General Becerra. “Bottom line: Today’s action by the Biden Administration is a win for public safety and community trust. At the California Department of Justice, we are always ready to stand up in court for our people, our values, and our resources.”
