California Statewide Fire Summary for September 17, 2021

September 17, 2021 - More than 10,400 firefighters continue to work towards containment on 14 major wildfires and one extended attack wildfire burning in California. Yesterday, firefighters also responded to Cal Fire15 new wildfires, all of which were quicky contained. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,480 wildfires, which have burned more than 2.28 million acres. The U.S. Forest Service ended the regional closure order affecting national forests in California yesterday, but closures remain in place for the El Dorado, Los Padres, Angeles, San Bernardino, and Cleveland National Forests due to local weather and fire factors.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for this weekend due to gusty winds and low humidity in Lassen and Modoc counties, as well as parts of Madera, Mono and Alpine.

In Northern California, high risk for strong winds and low relative humidity crest eastward today and Saturday. Increased onshore flow along the coast today that will be followed by significantly deeper troughing that will bring cooler conditions through the weekend. Southwest winds will increase today and Saturday favoring areas from the Cascade/Sierra crest eastward today and increasing on Saturday. A pacific frontal system and accompanying precipitation will reach the north coast Saturday afternoon and then continue south and east Saturday night through Sunday. In Southern California, high pressure over the desert southwest will gradually weaken as a weak area of low-pressure approaches and begins to merge with a trough off the west coast. The deeper, colder trough that forms will move inland over the region today through Sunday. Temperatures will gradually cool to a little below normal through the weekend. South to west afternoon and evening winds will periodically surface over the wind prone mountain and desert areas this afternoon, with stronger westerly winds expected across the mountains and deserts Saturday and Sunday.

As crews contain the wildfires, evacuations will be lifted, and residents allowed to return home. There are many hazards to watch out for when you get to your property, and crews are still working in the area. To learn more about returning home after a wildfire, visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
