May 29, 2022 - On Saturday, May 28, 2022, at about 7:30 PM, a deputy spotted a vehicle run a red light and begin driving recklessly in downtown Modesto. The driver of the vehicle began evading law enforcement when a traffic stop was attempted. Traveling north on Highway 99 at over 100 MPH, the vehicle exited at Standiford Avenue. The driver was unable to maintain control, causing the vehicle to continue through all lanes of traffic, exit the roadway, become airborne, and land inside a Modesto Irrigation District power station.
The vehicle struck lines when it entered the MID Station, causing them to fall to the ground. Out of caution for the safety of the driver and themselves, deputies waited for MID workers to arrive and determine the safest path to the vehicle. The driver, then identified as twenty-year-old Modesto resident Edward Peralta, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of major, but non-life-threatening injuries.
A search found Peralta was in possession of a Berreta handgun. It was also determined he had a Modesto Police Department warrant of arrest for DUI. Due to his injuries, Peralta will continue receiving medical care prior to being booked for possession of the firearm, the Modesto PD warrant, and felony evading law enforcement.
