Important Notice: Landline Phone Services
March 14, 2024 - Nevada County Sheriff's Office officials report that Sheriff Shannan Moon strongly opposes AT&T’s application to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), in which they seek to abandon their duty as Carrier of Last Resort (COLR) obligation.
If approved, this means AT&T will no longer be required to offer landline telephone services in select areas. In Nevada County, this specifically affects landline services in the following census defined places (CDP):
o Alta Sierra CDP and surrounding areas
o Floriston CDP and surrounding areas
o Grass Valley city and surrounding areas
o Kingvale CDP and surrounding areas
o Lake Wildwood CDP and surrounding areas
o Lake of the Pines CDP and surrounding areas
o Nevada City CDP and surrounding areas
o North San Juan CDP and surrounding areas
o Penn Valley CDP and surrounding areas
o Rough and Ready CDP and surrounding areas
o Soda Springs CDP and surrounding areas
o Truckee town and surrounding area
“Many Nevada County residents rely on AT&T landlines for emergency communications and services,” explained Sheriff Moon. “If AT&T is permitted to abandon its COLR obligation, this puts our residents’ livelihood at risk. Some residents will no longer have a way to call for help in the event of an emergency; report crimes; or receive evacuation orders in the event of fire danger.”
The public hearing regarding AT&T’s application is scheduled for March 19. To ensure landline connectivity remains available for all our residents, please join us in opposing AT&T’s application.
