Drive for Democracy Set for August 10th, Culminating with Rally in Mariposa
“Drive for Democracy” will Mobilize Sierra Foothill and Central Valley Communities to Demand Action on Healthcare, Housing, and Fairness for Working Families
August 8, 2025 – MARIPOSA, CA – Progressive Mariposa announces that on Sunday, August 10th, communities across California’s 5th Congressional District will come together for the Drive for Democracy, which will be the largest political mobilization against Tom McClintock that has occurred within his district. It will also be the largest rally ever held in Mariposa County history.
Indivisible groups and Democratic Party Central Committees from El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Mariposa counties have organized the event, and other Indivisible and like-minded organizations and individuals from Fresno, Madera, and Stanislaus counties are now joining the effort. The event will feature a rolling motorcade beginning in El Dorado County with meetup locations as they head south along Highway 49, culminating in a rally in Mariposa.
“Across the Sierra, people are coming together to tell Congressman Tom McClintock, State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, and Donald Trump that their policies are harming our communities,” said Heidi, an organizer in El Dorado County.
The rally in Mariposa will include speeches from a candidate for Senate District 4, Jaron Brandon, and Candidates for the 5th Congressional District, including Mike Barkley and Michael Masuda, as well as community leaders speaking on the challenges facing working families throughout the region.
Why We Are Mobilizing
The Drive for Democracy is a response to harmful policies from Congressman McClintock, State Senator Alvarado-Gil, and President Trump, that have failed to address the most pressing issues facing the people of the Sierras and Central Valley, which include:
- Expanding rural healthcare and keeping local hospitals open instead of cutting Medicare funding
- Tackling the housing crisis with affordable options, cheaper insurance, and safer living conditions for working families
- Providing expanded pre-school and after school programs instead of tax breaks for the wealthy
- Protecting clean air, clean water, and public lands from corporate exploitation
“The cost of living is crushing families,” said Niki from Sonora. “We're [Democrats] working for fair wages, affordable housing, and real relief… not tax cuts for billionaires”
