January 12, 2026 – Merced CHP officials report that Officer Garza recently stopped a vehicle traveling more than 100 miles per hour northbound on State Route 99 just north of Liberty Avenue. During the stop, the driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. Inside the vehicle were a couple of brightly colored party drinks that clearly belonged at home, not in the driver’s seat.
Driving well over the speed limit drastically reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Adding alcohol into the mix makes an already dangerous situation even more unpredictable. Fast roads demand full attention, clear judgment, and sober decision making.
If your night includes alcohol, your plans should include a safe ride home. And if you feel the urge to push the gas pedal, remember that speed limits are there to protect everyone on the roadway, including you.
Slow down. Drive sober. Get home safely.
What’s the fastest you’ve ever driven that made you immediately think “yeah, that wasn’t smart”?
