April 24, 2026 – Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office officials report that a man accused of posing as a police officer and robbing a City of Cupertino spa has been arrested after a week-long investigation.

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office detectives located and arrested 32-year-old Brendan Kroning of San Andreas on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in a San Jose parking garage. He is charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of false imprisonment, and one count of impersonating a police officer.

The arrest stems from a robbery on April 15, at Sunny Spa on South De Anza Boulevard. Employees told detectives that a man entered the business just before 5:30 p.m. wearing a vest, a duty belt, and what appeared to be a handgun. He claimed he was a police officer there for an inspection of the business.

Once inside, the suspect unplugged the spa’s security cameras and asked employees to open their cash register. After being shown the register, he took a large amount of cash and ran out of the building. He was last seen getting into a car parked in an alley. No one was hurt.

Deputies responded within minutes and, with help from City of Los Altos Police Department and Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, searched the surrounding shopping center using several K 9 teams. Although the suspect wasn’t found that day, detectives continued investigating.

Through follow up work, detectives identified Kroning as the suspect, and when they arrested him, they found evidence inside his car that tied him to the Cupertino robbery. With assistance from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office detectives also served a search warrant at his San Andreas home.

Detectives are now looking to identify any additional victims who may have experienced similar incidents involving Kroning or someone impersonating a police officer.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds community members that real law enforcement officers will always identify themselves, provide proper credentials, and never ask to access cash registers or money during routine visits.

Anyone with information, whether you saw something, have surveillance video, or believe you may be a victim is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Investigative Services Division at 408-808-4500. Anonymous tips can be left at 408-808-4431.
